LOST

I see them up before me
gently twinkling through the trees
The forest’s wet with winter
and the snow’s up to my knees -
I stand here, not cold
though I should be
frozen to the bone
still, I keep looking
at the night sky
and the stars to bring me home.

Oh! The darkness, so relentless
tethers sinews to the sky
woven tightly to the empty winter
landscape and my eyes
So weary, these emotions want me
steadfast in this place
low, the warmth of home excites me
bid I quicken up the pace.

Yet, the road ahead is daunting
haunting in a darkened glow and
through its branching mausoleum
I know not which way to go -

Beleaguered feet, they beckon
“Hearken, rest your heavy eyes”
Just for a moment in the warmth
under the twinkling forest sky.
