SPARKLY BLUE YOUTH

I knew it the minute I opened the box

A sparkly blue helmet, I put it right on

Like exclamations from its edges, my straggly blonde locks

Framed a grin brighter than the tree the lights shone upon

I opened every gift with exuberance and zeal, for

A clue a small hint at what I didn’t know was outside

A yellow motorcycle, silver gas tank, spoked shiny black wheels,

Me and my sparkly blue helmet couldn’t wait to go ride.

For years we rode wild on back trails in pine’d woods

Till my grin now with teeth, my shirt with 'A’ cups

Announced the passing of an era, of my childhood,

I was now a young woman it was time to grow up.

I sold my salad days, that day – I sold its motorized companion too,
and left behind me those childhood days and my helmet, Sparkly Blue.
