Family Photos

In a modern world, we lose sight of the simplest treasures. Take photographs, always

We froze ourselves in moments
stolen by rapid striking light.
Placed them into folders;
coupons with memories to ignite.
The coupons we collected,
little tokens of the years.
Those we delicately selected,
times of laughter, times of tears.

Grandma kept the albums,
tucked them away upon her shelf.
Forgotten, in the corner,
generations of our wealth.
Not measured by our wallets,
or the figures in accounts.
But by the tales, our true treasures,
which we’d gather to recount.

We’d toddle through the albums
asking questions, while we were young.
But then, as we grew taller
mobile phones became 'more fun’.
Social lives and parties,
keeping up with latest trends.
We’d forget about those coupons
gathering new ones with our friends.

Grandma loved those albums.
And often, on her own.
She’d wander through the pages
see, she ‘never liked those silly phones!’
Yet the coupons, heirlooms, trinkets,
the albums with their stories.
To us, 'just a book’
to her they hold her pride and glory.

There will come a day
the albums lay
forgotten on the shelf.
Others, they might bicker
over 'Grandma’s gifted wealth’.
Save those coupons– please!
Take a wander you might find
that there is much more actual value
to the coupons, kept lovingly inside.
A glance into the past a ticket through an open door
to visit all of the faces
of the ones whom we adore.

Money. It has value. Yes,
gone within the day.
The coupons hold infinite value -
the ones who went away.
