Little by Little

Little by little this prison
sucked from me every bit of energy.
Not so much at the very start
when you said you loved me every day.
When you petted and kissed me prettily
and held me proudly on your knee.
But what a palace once did seem
crumbled darkly into a grave
from which no egress was allowed.
Now I lie in deathless sleep,
sorrow wrapped round my very face.
I scream, but there is no one to hear.
I beg and my words are soundless cries.
Death would be a mercy, but no death
comes to take me.
