Those Nights

From poetry book, The Girl Who Moves Forward by Everkesia Taylor

And as I prayed for the Lord
To lay me down to sleep,
I could hear it,
Thin as they were,
These walls could never silence
The screams that stretched throughout
Our house like the blanket that
Covered my bed.

Those nights,
His voice dripped of sweat and shame,
And hers was loud, hot and bare,
And ran naked around the house
With every secret exposed
For us to hear.

Those nights,
My mother spit her heart
Onto my father,
As if made of acid,
He burned, and she cried,
And I could no longer fall asleep.
